Overview
Lake Malawi is an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system, located between Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. It is also known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique.
It is the world’s fifth-largest freshwater lake by volume, the ninth largest lake by area, and Africa’s third and second-deepest lake. Lake Malawi has more fish species than any other lake in the world, including at least 700 cichlids. The Mozambique portion of the lake was officially declared a reserve by the Mozambique government on June 10, 2011, while a portion of the lake is included in the Lake Malawi National Park in Malawi.
