Overview

The Livingstonia Mission is a particularly interesting place to visit. At 3000ft (900m) above Lake Malawi and in the shadow of the Nyika Plateau, there are breathtaking views across the lake to Tanzania. But Livingstonia is also a fascinating and beautiful town with a fascinating history.

Livingstonia is an outstanding example of Scottish missionaries’ work in Malawi, continuing a tradition began in the 1870s. The mission’s location is a case of third-time lucky. Dr Robert Laws, a disciple of David Livingstone, chose the original Livingstonia site on the lakeshore at Cape Maclear. However, the mosquitoes and malaria forced Laws to relocate to Bandawe, near Chintheche, on Lake Malawi.
